Now is the time to make your voice heard. While the General Session has wrapped, the Utah Legislature’s interim session offers an excellent opportunity for education leaders to influence policy before bills are finalized. Here is how you can stay involved and shape the future of public education:
1. UNDERSTAND THE INTERIM PROCESS
· The Legislative Interim Session includes monthly committee meetings on key topics.
· Education issues are typically heard by the Education Interim Committee and Public Education Appropriations, with related topics discussed in other committees like Retirement & Independent Entities or Law Enforcement & Criminal Justice.
2. PARTICIPATE IN INTERIM COMMITTEES
· Watch for posted agendas (usually posted the week prior to meetings).
· If a topic impacts your district:
o Attend in person or online
o Submit feedback to the committee
o Offer to meet with your legislator before the meeting
· Tip: Interim is less hectic than session—more time for real dialogue.
3. BE SOLUTIONS-ORIENTED
· Speak to challenges—but also bring ideas.
· Share local success stories, data, and proposals that protect:
o Student outcomes
o Local control
o Fiscal responsibility
4. Educate Your Community
· Use your platform to keep your local community informed about education issues under consideration.
· Share updates during board meetings, on social media, or in newsletters.
· Encourage parents and educators to get involved, too—collective voices carry weight.
REMEMBER: Your Voice Shapes Policy - School leaders are on the frontlines of Utah education. Interim is your chance to ensure policies reflect what is truly happening in our classrooms and communities. Let’s work together to protect and strengthen public education.
