John Dodds, Superintendent of Garfield School District, has been named Utah’s 2025 Superintendent of the Year by the Utah School Superintendents Association (USSA). With this honor, he now advances as a candidate for the National Superintendent of the Year Award, presented by the American Association of School Administrators (AASA). The national winner will be announced at AASA’s Annual Conference on Education in February 2026.

Superintendent Dodds was selected for this recognition in June through a vote of his USSA peers, with the formal announcement made on August 21, 2025, during the Garfield School District Board meeting in Panguitch, Utah. The award honors superintendents who demonstrate exceptional leadership, vision, and dedication in guiding Utah school districts toward success.

Last year, Superintendent Dodds served as president of USSA, where he brought a clear vision for strengthening the organization and elevating professional development opportunities for superintendents statewide. His leadership helped ensure that Utah’s educational leaders were not only supported but also equipped to better serve their districts and communities.

USSA Executive Director Lexi Cunningham praised Superintendent Dodds, noting his statewide influence: “Congratulations to Superintendent Dodds, a remarkable leader in public education who has had a profound impact not only on the students and families of Garfield School District but also across our state. This past year, Superintendent Dodds served as president of USSA, where he consistently emphasized the vital role that educational leaders play in shaping schools and communities. He represented USSA throughout the year advocating for public education.”

Garfield School District, serving more than 1,200 PreK–12 students, is recognized for its robust online learning program, diverse Career and Technical Education (CTE) pathways, and strong commitment to professional development for all staff. Now entering his sixth year as superintendent, Dodds continues to draw upon his experiences as a teacher, building administrator, and district leader. His unwavering dedication to public education and respected reputation have made him a trusted voice for students, families, and communities across Utah.
