At the Utah School Superintendents Association, leadership extends beyond boardrooms, legislative sessions, and district offices. It is rooted in relationships. This year, USSA President Kodey Hughes, Juab School District, has launched the 2026–2027 President's Initiative: Connection & Well-Being, an effort designed to strengthen the relationships that sustain Utah's educational leaders.
Superintendents serve in one of the most demanding leadership roles in public education. They navigate complex challenges, make difficult decisions, and carry tremendous responsibility for students, employees, and communities. While the work is deeply rewarding, it can also be isolating. The President's Initiative recognizes that strong leaders are supported by strong relationships and that investing in one another ultimately benefits every school district in Utah.
The initiative officially began during the USSA Summer Leadership Meeting in Cedar City in July 2026. Throughout the conference, superintendents participated in activities intentionally designed to foster meaningful conversations, strengthen professional relationships, and create opportunities to connect outside of formal meetings. From collaborative discussions to an evening of bowling, members had opportunities to build friendships, share experiences, and enjoy time together in a relaxed setting.
These experiences are more than social events—they are intentional investments in leadership. Research consistently shows that leaders with strong professional networks experience greater resilience, improved decision-making, and higher levels of job satisfaction. When superintendents know they have trusted colleagues they can call for advice, encouragement, or perspective, they are better equipped to lead their districts through both opportunities and challenges.
Connection is also closely tied to well-being. Healthy leaders create healthy organizations. By encouraging authentic relationships and supporting one another personally and professionally, USSA is helping build a culture where leaders can thrive, reducing isolation while increasing collaboration across the state.
The Cedar City gathering marked only the beginning. Throughout the coming year, the President's Initiative will feature additional opportunities for members—and in many cases their spouses and families—to connect through informal gatherings, service opportunities, and shared experiences. Each event will reinforce USSA's commitment to creating a supportive community where every superintendent feels welcomed, valued, and connected.
