Policy only works when it works in classrooms. Utah’s superintendents help turn literacy policy into practice—supporting educators, families, and students every day. Working this session to update policy so all students receive quality instruction and necessary supports.

Leadership is practiced not so much in words as in attitude and in actions. In education, young people and colleagues will always remember how a leader made them feel seen, valued, and capable. (Harold S. Geneen)

We held the first JLC meeting of the year today! Today marks the start of important conversations about Utah’s public education priorities, funding, and policy direction. We appreciate the education leaders who show up each week to dig into the details & keep students at the center of the work. Looking forward to a year of thoughtful dialogue & informed decision-making.

Tucked inside the Utah State Capitol, the Hall of Governors tells the story of Utah’s leadership—from territorial days to today. Each portrait represents a moment in our state’s history and a reminder that public service shapes the future we hand to the next generation.

Rural Caucus met this afternoon. We are so thankful to our rural legislators who attend this weekly meeting and help us stay updated on bills. Their support of our schools is appreciated. We talked about our shared commitment to accelerate literacy in Utah. Great meeting!

Literacy is more than reading—it’s the foundation for learning in every subject.
When students read proficiently early, they are more likely to succeed long-term. Utah continues to focus on literacy and students reading at grade level. Thank you, policy leaders, & school leaders!

No man will make a great leader who wants to do it all himself or get all the credit for doing it. Educational leadership requires collaboration—lifting many voices, and ensuring progress belongs to everyone, not a single person. (Andrew Carnegie)

Please join us in welcoming Greg Maughn to USSA leadership as our new 2nd VP! Greg serves as the superintendent of South Summit. He brings thoughtful leadership & a strong commitment to students. We’re excited to have his perspective as part of the USSA team. Welcome, Greg!

The supreme quality of leadership is integrity. Without it, no real success is possible. Educational leaders demonstrate integrity not only by upholding values, but by modeling them daily in classrooms, hallways, and boardrooms. (Dwight D. Eisenhower)
